Merlot clinging to bedrock

As is often the case the meaning of Bissio has been forgotten. In Occitan ‘v’ is pronounced ‘b’ and so it could be reasoned that this is Visio or Vice. It is one of our steepest parcels, with certain slopes measuring above 50 degrees. It is a saddle that faces both north east and south west. We are working towards our first fruit from this vineyard in 2025 as it had not been pruned since 2020.

The parcel sits on a knoll at the confluence of two valleys. The eastern half of the vineyard is in the Vallée des Très Vent, and the western half is in the Vallée de la Pierre Planté. The eastern half is the steepest and sits on pure bedrock with pockets of rich topsoil and blue clay. The western half is decomposed schist with more quartz and sand on the same schist bedrock. In the centre of the vineyard is a schist mazet with a spring water well.

For the farming season of 2025 we are focusing on repairing old trellising and pushing the encroaching forest back to the edges of the vineyard. If we can keep the mouflon out we should be able to harvest a barrel or two worth of Merlot.

Bissio! Bissio! Bi! Si! O!
