an ancient hillside vineyard

Propiénous has been planted to the vine since at least the 17th century

The meaning of ‘Propiénous’ has been lost but has appeared on maps as a vineyard as far back as the 1820s. At it’s largest in the 1950s and 60s it measured nearly 10 hectares. Today we are farming the remaining heart of the parcel which was planted to Chardonnay in the late 1980s.

Propiénous can be divided into six small parcels. Each of these parcels have slightly different exposures, differing quantities of topsoil and were planted at different times and for this reason we vinify them separately.

Propiénous as a whole is schist with a very thin layer of rich topsoil on top of bedrock that is visible at the surface throughout the vineyard. It faces southwest at an average altitude of 320m above sea level.

We enjoy the abundant bird life around this magical little parcel but are also visited often by wild boar, hares, deer and the mouflon of the Caroux. We are honoured to have secured this vineyard to keep it producing fruit and to vinify that fruit into it’s own wine for the first time.

Vive le Propiénous!
